Drainage Calculators

50+ free professional-grade calculators for hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater management. From simple pipe sizing to complex flood frequency analysis.

How to Use Our Calculators

Our collection of 50 professional-grade drainage calculators covers the full spectrum of drainage design needs. Whether you're a homeowner addressing yard drainage or an engineer designing a complex stormwater system, we have the right tool for your project.

Calculators are organized into four main categories:

  • Hydrology: Calculate runoff volumes, peak flows, and watershed response using the Rational Method, SCS Curve Number, hydrograph analysis, and regional flood estimation.
  • Hydraulics: Analyze flow in pipes and open channels using Manning's equation, determine critical depth, evaluate channel capacity, and design conveyance systems.
  • Stormwater BMP: Design green infrastructure including rain gardens, bioretention, permeable pavers, detention ponds, cisterns, and other low-impact development practices.
  • Drainage Structures: Size inlets, catch basins, French drains, roof drains, culverts, trench drains, and outlet protection systems using HEC-22, HEC-14, and industry standards.

All calculators implement industry-standard methodologies from NRCS, FHWA, ASCE, HEC, and other authoritative sources. No registration required — simply select a calculator, enter your project parameters, and get instant results with full transparency into the calculations.

Drainage Calculation FAQs

How do you calculate drainage?

The most common method is the Rational Method, Q = CiA, where peak runoff (Q) equals the runoff coefficient (C) times rainfall intensity (i) times drainage area (A). Larger sites use the SCS Curve Number method to estimate runoff volume.

Read the Rational Method guide →

What size drain pipe do I need?

Pipe size depends on the flow rate, pipe slope and material roughness. Enter your design flow and slope into a Manning's equation solver and it returns the minimum diameter that carries the flow without surcharging.

Size a storm drain pipe →

How much fall does a drain need?

A common minimum for gravity drains is roughly 1% (about 1 unit of fall per 100 of run), though the exact grade depends on pipe size, flow and local code. Use the fall calculator to convert between slope, gradient and total fall over your run.
